Clashes in Libya
The CIA Director William Burns stated that the Taliban are now militarily entrenched in Afghanistan more than ever since 2001. Such was his comment on the information that the Afghan government could fall in half a year after the end of pulling of the US troops from the country. He noted that the Afghan government still has significant military potential, and it has an ability to resist the Taliban. The Afghan Defense Ministry has denied the reports that the Taliban controls 90% of Afghan borders. According to a spokesman of the ministry - the information is ’’a lying propaganda’’. The ministry added that the control is in the hands of the Afghan security forces. Along the border, all the major cities and major routes are also under the control of the Afghan government and the security forces. The Wall Street Journal reported that the US authorities intend to deploy about 35,000 Afghan translators and their family members at two military bases in Kuwait and Qatar. There they will wait for the American visas. Those people face a possible retaliation from the Taliban for helping the US forces. At those bases, the Afghans will be provided with temporary housing for at least 18 months. This is expected to cost "several hundred millions of dollars". ’’The Wall Street Journal’’ reported that the US and Iraqi authorities will issue a statement that it is necessary to pull the US forces from Iraq by the end of 2021. The Wall Street Journal cites sources who noted that "the US military presence will still be needed after the pulling’’. It was noted that the statement will be made to "allow the Iraqi leadership to ease the political pressure from the hard-line Shiia groups who want the US forces to leave the country". At the same time, Baghdad will be able to maintain the support of the Iraqi security forces from the USA. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, expressed a common opinion at the last meeting that the Syrian Constitutional Committee should continue its work. It was underlined that the work should be continued without any preconditions and interference. The ministry noted that Lavrov and Pedersen discussed in detail the current situation in Syria, while paying attention to the urgent tasks of a comprehensive humanitarian response, and while taking into account the socio-economic situation in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Libyan armed groups had a fight near the National Unity Government building in Tripoli - the local mass media reported. The fight took place between the Abdel Rauf Karr’s Special Containment Forces, related to the now gone Faiz Sarraj’s Government of National Accord, and between Abdel Ghani al-Kikli’s Stability Support Troops, related to the Libyan Presidential Council. It was noted that the Karr’s forces managed to block the road leading to the building of the Government of National Unity.
