The training was announced in a response to the visit of the US Congress Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan. The Chinese newspaper ’Global Times’ reported that the Chinese forces are conducting the training while using modern weaponry, including the J-20 fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles. One military expert called the training to be "unprecedented", since the Chinese missiles will cross the skies over the island of Taiwan for the first time. The Chinese forces will be at a distance of 12 nautical miles from Taiwan.
