Donald Trump’s impeachment proceedings
1 The USA The Senate of the US Congress recognized the impeachment procedure of the ex-president Donald Trump as constitutional. For 4 hours, the prosecutors from the House of Representatives and Donald Trump’s lawyers argued about the constitutionality of the impeachment process. 56 senators, 50 Democrats and 6 Republicans, agreed that the impeachment procedure is in line with the US laws. 44 senators voted ’against’. According to the US mass-media - the former US president will be acquitted once again. 2 Syria The UN Secretary General’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, stated during a videoconference that he plans to take part in a meeting in the Astana format on the Syrian settlement. The meeting will take place on 16th and 17th of February, in Sochi. Geir Pedersen added that the 5th session of the Constitutional Committee, which ended in Geneva, "was a missed opportunity and a disappointment". He noted that "there is no clear plan of action for the future yet". On 1st of February the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the guarantors of the Astana process will discuss the work of the Constitutional Committee, which "should be guided by the desire for a compromise and constructive interaction, without any foreign interference and deadlines from outside. It is necessary for a common agreement among its members." 3 Nagorno-Karabakh Lieutenant-General Rustam Muradov, the commander of the Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh, announced that an another exchange of PoWs took place in order to implement the agreement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia from 9th of November, 2020. The Russian peacekeepers delivered 1 prisoner by a Russian military aircraft to Baku, and returned 5 prisoners to Yerevan. Rustam Muradov added that the Russian peacekeepers will continue to contribute to the strict implementation of the trilateral agreement. 4 The UN - Libya The chairman of the UN Security Council announced that the UN Security Council called on the new interim government of Libya to quickly form an inclusive government, and to carry out the necessary preparatory work for the presidential and parliamentary elections, planned for December of 2021. The UN Security Council welcomed the agreement to form a new single executive body in Libya. The agreement was reached at the forum of the Libyan political dialogue, which took place from 1st to 5ft of February, in Switzerland. The Security Council demanded that all the warring parties must fully comply with the terms of the permanent ceasefire, which was concluded in Geneva, in October of 2020. 5 Saudi Arabia The ’Sky News Arabia’ TV reported that the Arabian coalition, led by Saudi Arabia, reported an attack by the Yemeni ’Ansar Allah’ movement on an airport in the Saudi city of Abha. The attack, reportedly, set on fire a civilian plane at the airport. At the moment the fire has been extinguished. No details of the attack on the airport were reported. 6 China - India The Chinese Ministry of Defense reported that in accordance with the agreements, China and India started to pull troops from the joint border near Lake Pangong Tso. "Both sides simultaneously began the planned withdrawal of the troops from the border, in accordance with the agreements that were reached during the 9th round of negotiations, at the level of army commanders" - the ministry stated.
