special program
Hello. This is a special program from ANNA NEWS. I am Constantine Reztsov, and today we will talk about the resolution that was adopted by the French Senate. The representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities criticized that resolution. The French Senate called on the French government to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, the sole reason of the confrontation between Azerbaijan and Armenia that went for decades, which later turned into a war during this fall. The French authorities explained their position by noting that there was no question of the recognition. As the ’Associated Press’ noted - the resolution adopted on Wednesday is symbolic, and it doesn’t mean that the French government will recognize the sovereignty of Nagorno-Karabakh. Thus, the Senate simply supported the large Armenian community in France. Nevertheless, the very step of the parliament sparked outrage in Azerbaijan, which had previously criticized France for taking a "pro-Armenian position" in the dispute. Dozens of people went out on Thursday to protest in front of the French embassy in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, while chanting "Be fair, France!" An adviser to the President of Azerbaijan, Hikmet Hajiyev, condemned the resolution of the French Senate as "a document, adopted to pursue narrow political ambitions." "The open pro-Armenian position of France became one of the main factors that hinders the peaceful settlement of the conflict" - he stated. On Wednesday evening, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that this document that has no legal force can only be viewed as a "provocation". The Azerbaijani parliament called on the government of the country to contact the OSCE and ask the organization to remove France as a co-chair of the Minsk Group, created by the OSCE back in 1992 to mediate in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The parliament also called on the government to "review the existing political relationship with France’’. Meanwhile, the French President Emmanuel Macron had a meeting with the Armenian community in France during this week. The French authorities sent humanitarian aid to Armenia twice during November. Macron called for an "international monitoring" of the implementation of the agreement, made to end the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The agreement was developed under the guidance of Russia. It provides a deployment of the Russian peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh for 5 years. Under the terms of the agreement, Azerbaijan will restore the control over several regions and administrative units, adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh, which were under Armenian control for 27 years. The ’ANNA News’ agency is following the development of the events. Stay tuned.
